The following series was produced for the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual ‘New Contemporaries’ exhibition, which showcases a curated group of artists who have recently graduated across Scotland.
The series was heavily inspired by a body of research into historical narrative panel painting, and was intended as a playful, introspective record. Incorporating elements of the surreal, the work juxtaposes candid, observational imagery with surreal, more loosely representative symbols, drawn from personal, art historical, or cultural reference points.
Here the painting process aims to tread the line between an, archival, pragmatic approach to documenting experience - one that views ,memory as a logical cognitive process and a more intimate intuitive examination of the mental states at play.
The series won the VAA ‘New Artist’ award
